Laspa’s Center for Leadership: Women and Congress Seminar

During this year’s spring break, 11 Scripps students traded their swimsuits for business suits. Through the Alternative Spring Break program, funded by Scripps’ own Laspa Center for Leadership, participants flew to Washington, D.C., to attend a Women and Congress seminar sponsored by the Public Leadership Education Network, a national organization focused on preparing college women for leadership roles in the public policy arena.

The Scripps Experience: The Motley Coffeehouse Student Bake Off

Since 2011, the Motley has also been home to an annual Student Bake Off, pitting entrants from across the 5Cs against each other to see who can make the tastiest baked goods, as judged by their peers. Winners have their treats added to the Motley menu for the week.

The Scripps Experience: Chronicling the Experiences of First-Gen Students

As the College welcomed its largest-ever cohort of first-year students this past fall, the First-Generation @ Scripps Newsletter was preparing to introduce the Scripps community to a few of those new faces on campus. The newsletter, currently in its fifth volume, is edited by the First-Gen Program co-coordinators and speaks to the experiences of Scripps students who are the first in their families to attend college. Co-coordinators Evelyn Gonzalez ’18 and Clarisse Salazar ’18 decided that “firsts” would be an appropriate theme to kick off the most recent issue.

Campus Events: Scripps Dances Annual Spring Concert

Students, faculty, and guest artists come together on April 21 and 22 for Scripps Dances, the Âé¶¹Çø Dance Department’s annual spring concert. Presenting original dance pieces choreographed by students and faculty, this year’s program features many “abstract dances and socially minded works that explore the importance of belonging, intimacy, and connectivity,” says Assistant Professor of Dance Kevin Williamson, co-chair of the department.
